I bought this off Ebay recently. It is the book to go with the 1978 BBC series. And the jumpsuits on the front cover might have put me off but the clever seller had some pictures from inside too.
This (slightly flash flooded) coat pattern is an absolute classic. You can see coats just like this today. And it's why I bought the book. But, there's also...
I used to wear a dress just like this when I was small. It was really easy for small fingers to do up, there's a zip at the centre front. And of course it doesn't have to be made in grey for school. And the boy's face is fabulous, I'm not sure whether he's cross, crying, upset or just grumpy!
And of course there's some classic 70s styling going on. Floral dungarees anyone?:)
The shiny pages don't photograph well, and this is the best pic I could get of this dress. It's lovely, and I'm already planning to make one for Kathryn.

The 1970s, as far as I'm concerned, is not a fashion era I wish to return to. I lived through it once, and like the 1980s, I feel that once was enough. And the coats (there are several) are all fabulously classic patterns. A hooded raglan jacket, an anorak, and the coat pictured above. I think the only thing really not worth updating is the patchwork Christening gown.
So what fashion eras do people feel is not for them? Myself I think the 70s and later and that's mostly because I lived through them. I do wonder if I would be as fond of the late 40s and early 50s style if I had lived through them.

"Patchwork Christening gown" To that I can only say WTF????
It looks like there are some otherwise great projects in there, though! I cringe a little every time I hear that the 80s are coming back. Once was definitely enough for me.
I have a fond memory of a picture of my step mom with her girl friends. Her girlfriends are wearing bell-bottoms with wide, notch-collared shirts and vests, and very Mary Tyler Moore hair. My step mom has levis 501s and a home-made halter top. With the exception of the halter top (I would wear an oversized T-shirt) that's me. The jeans and the oversized T are MY era-- no matter which era I'm living in!
That coat is definitely timeless. Personally, I prefer timelessness in all my clothes, but that could just be me being a wimp! ;)
I love the coat! I think every little girl around here had one at one time.
I don't want to return to the 80s. The shoulder pads alone would make me cringe.
Very kewl patterns. Somethings never go out of style.
